2011 Australian GP – Race Results

The 2011 F1 season got off to a great start today with an exciting race in Melbourne. Sebastian Vettel picked up from where he had left off in 2010, and was untouchable as he romped away from the field to his first victory of the season. McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton pushed hard but ultimately had to settle for second place. Vitaly Petrov silenced his critics with a scintillating drive to third, as the Renault team kicked off their season in style.

Down the field there were some impressive performances from the Sauber drivers, as Perez scored points on his debut, and Paul di Resta finished a strong 12th. Ferrari displayed better race pace, but were beaten by the raw speed of McLaren and Red Bull. It took some clever strategy and brilliant driving from Alonso to leapfrog Button and Webber. The new teams remained in their usual places throughout the race, although Lotus demonstrated better pace today.

Both Mercedes cars retired, with Barrichello taking out Rosberg, and there were overtaking manoeuvres all around as drivers came to grips with the DRS and KERS boost.

Full analysis to follow shortly. Here are the results :
