2011 Malaysian GP – Saturday Practice Results

Lewis Hamilton moved to the top of the timesheets in the morning practice session, displacing Red Bull’s Mark Webber for the first time this weekend. The sister McLaren of Jenson Button was equally impressive in third, although Vettel was held up by traffic on his fastest lap and might have gone faster. The Ferraris put on an improved showing with Alonso and Massa 6th and 8th, but were still some way off the pace.

Renault were strong throughout the session, with Heidfeld and Petrov both in the top 10. Mercedes were 10th and 11th, the first time they’ve been well behind the leading pace, and it looks like a difficult weekend ahead for the German drivers if this is the real performance level of their cars.

The rest of the field was more or less spaced out normally, but the Williams FW33 seemed to be struggling with the track characteristics. Lotus meanwhile was well ahead of the other new teams, and HRT seems capable of getting both cars on the starting line for tomorrow. The much expected rain did not arrive, and with clear skies over Sepang throughout this weekend, it may turn out to be disappointing for many who expected rain to spice things up.

Here are the results :
