2011 Turkish GP – Friday Practice 1 Results

The first practice session for the Turkish Grand Prix got off to a wet start and the teams were able to sample Pirelli’s wet weather tyres for the first time this year. Fernando Alonso was the fastest man in today’s morning run, despite complaining of poor grip on the intermediates. He was also the only driver to dip below the 1:40s mark, with a 1:38.670 lap. Rosberg and Schumacher put in a lot of mileage and finished second and third fastest, followed by the two Renault cars, Heidfeld ahead of Petrov. With changing conditions, however, not much can be read into these laptimes. In circumstances such as these, usually the fastest drivers are those who got the best of the conditions to run in.

Narain Karthikeyan stopped his HRT on his first lap out, and he appeared to have hit something. He was able to go out for a proper run only in the last 10 minutes. Surprisingly, both the McLarens stayed in the garage after completing an installation lap, which is strange considering that some wet running could be helpful if there’s a little bit of rain during the race. Hamilton tried to go out in the dying moments to do some practice starts, but left it a little too late, and the pitlane closed just as he came up to it.

The main incident during the fully wet session was the crash Sebastian Vettel had with a little over 20 minutes to go. Having sat in the garage for most of the time, possibly waiting for the conditions to improve, the world champion went out on intermediates on a track that was soaking wet and demanded respect. He exited Turn 8 , driving his car well onto the kerb, which kicked out the tail, and slammed the car into the barriers after slewing across the track. Session over for the German. Red flags came out as his car was towed back to the pits.

One interesting aspect of the wet weather running was the durability of the Pirelli wet tyres, or rather the lack of it. Drivers reported that they were lasting just a bit longer than the soft compound tyres. In any case, the rest of the weekend is expected to be dry, so it may not be much of a factor, but if it does rain, expect to see some very interesting strategies and results on Sunday afternoon.

Here are the session results :
