2011 Turkish GP – Friday Practice 2 Results

The afternoon session of Friday free practice for the Turkish GP was totally dry, in contrast to the morning run, and McLaren’s Jenson Button emerged fastest with a 1:26.456 ahead of Nico Rosberg in his Mercedes. Their team mates were third and fourth fastest respectively, as the silver cars stretched their legs on the fully dry track. Behind them was the Red Bull of Mark Webber, who had a largely uneventful day of practice today.

McLaren demonstrated the performance advantage they currently have, although it must be said that Mercedes are looking extremely competitive. Rosberg asserted that the team’s pace in China was for real, and if that is true, then they are a real threat to McLaren in the coming races. Schumacher, despite several lurid spins in both sessions, was just as quick as his team mate for most part of the day.

Massa was sixth and well ahead of his team mate Alonso, who struggled with some hydraulic issues and was only 11th quickest. Ferrari have brought a number of new parts for this race and the last thing they need is their lead driver to have reliability problems. The car appears to have improved, but there’s no way to make a definitive judgement until the end of qualifying.

Championship leader Sebastian Vettel had to sit out the session thanks to his crash in the morning. With not much in the way of wet running, and now an missing an entire dry practice session while his car was being repaired, the reigning champion is not having a good start to the weekend. But never underestimate Seb, he is the master of the last-gasp Q3 run and will still be a strong contender for the win.

As always, with each team sticking to a dedicated setup program, the times are largely irrelevant. Here are the results :
