2011 Spanish GP – Saturday Practice Results

Saturday practice at the Circuit de Catalunya in Spain gave an indication of just how far ahead Red Bull are in terms of performance. Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber were much quicker than their rivals expected, lapping in the 1:21s while others barely made the 1:23s mark. And once again, Sebastian is psychologically pounding his team mate into the ground. He did not set a lap time for most of the session, aborting a couple of runs, and completed his first timed lap just after the chequered flag came out, but that was enough to beat Webber’s time by 0.084 seconds. It wasn’t just a lap; it was a statement. A statement to Webber that he, Sebastian, cannot be beaten.

Saturday practice for the Turkish GP started under blue and sunny skies and the teams got a second session of dry running this weekend. The Silver Arrows continued their strong showing from Friday practice, with Nico Rosberg fourth fastest behind Webber in the second RBR-Renault.

Sebastian Vettel is looking in complete control of the Chinese Grand Prix this weekend after making a clean sweep of practice session honours. Although McLaren are fairly close to the leading Red Bull’s pace, it must be said that Vettel could still have a bit of speed in reserve. After setting the fastest time on the harder of the two compounds, the world champion switched to the softer tyres and effortlessly went to the top once again, beating whatever McLaren, Ferrari or Mercedes could come up with.

Lewis Hamilton moved to the top of the timesheets in the morning practice session, displacing Red Bull’s Mark Webber for the first time this weekend. The sister McLaren of Jenson Button was equally impressive in third, although Vettel was held up by traffic on his fastest lap and might have gone faster. The Ferraris put on an improved showing with Alonso and Massa 6th and 8th, but were still some way off the pace.

2011 Australian GP – Saturday Practice Results

Sebastian Vettel fired a clear warning shot to his rivals as he topped Saturday practice with a scorching lap of 1:24.507, almost 9 tenths faster than his team mate Mark Webber. The McLarens were right behind the Red Bull pair, but they were more than a second off the world champion’s pace. Ferrari were a bit off-colour, with Fernando only sixth, behind Petrov. But it still doesn’t show us the actual pace of the cars – Fernando can surely go faster, Rosberg and Schumacher should be in the top 8 by my reckoning.
